Pumpkin Patch Festival & Author Book Signing

Welcome back everyone to “Booknerd in a Bookstore”! If you’re checking out my blog for the first time, “Welcome”!

I’ve had some fun adventures these past two weeks at the Bookstore. Remember how I mentioned that on Day one, I was recruited for Acting in Children’s theatre? No? Did you read my previous post? It’s okay, I’ll give you a couple minutes to skim through and catch up..

No really, I’m good. I’ve got yummy pumpkin coffee and buttery, crusty bread here for dipping.

Hey, you’re back! So, the next few shifts I worked were split between training for the Bookstore and rehearsing in the outside patio, the skit for the Pumpkin Patch Festival on Saturday morning. It was really cute and excruciatingly hot! That’s Florida for ya!

The skit was based on the book, “The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything” by Linda Williams. The employees each played a part and our Friday afternoon Story Time (at 4pm) coordinator narrated while we brought the story to life to the best of our ability. The kids loved it, and they “Clomp”, “Wiggle”, “Shake”, “Clap”, “Nod”, and “Boo”ed along with us.

Then, we had a surprise in the end for them…

A SCARECROW!

The director of our skit, who was ever so patient with us employees, went all out and walked on stilts, dressed up like this Scarecrow! How awesome was that?!

That kids loved it! Some, well, some little tots were a bit petrified but many embraced the scarecrow and took pictures with it. It turned out to be a cute and great event! If only it were actually Fall in South Florida instead of roasting with pumpkins outside in the Summer heat. Something just does not seem right about that. Oh, well. At least we try to get into the spirit of the seasons!

Cafe Goodies

Next,

was training at the Cafe. I mean, really, what more could this girl ask for in regards to a place of part-time employment…Coffee AND Books! (plus sprinkle on some bookish community events…yeah…Oh, yeah!)

During my time off or on a long break, I would sit with my iPad and/or current book read and enjoy some goodies from the cafe. (ref: above picture) This tasty pairing was recommended by one of my fellow Cafe co-workers. Turkey Pesto Panini and Dirty Chai...Nom Nom Nom! nuff said *wink*

After working at Starbucks sporadically for three years, working an entirely different Cafe system takes some adjusting to. It was a busy morning leading into the afternoon, but it was nice getting a feel for things and meeting some of the regulars who come by. Hoping to get into a decent flow soon enough, where my poor patient co-workers are not needing to aid in my rescue every two minutes…no really, it was like every two minutes I had a question and needed help. I don’t like feeling insecure about my job, not knowing yet whats expected of me, so I can then perform efficiently. Patience, young padwon (yes, I am telling myself), all in due time.

And Theeeeeen,

AUTHOR BOOK SIGNING!

As if I weren’t excited about the going on’s at my job enough, we had an author come in for a book signing! Middle Grade (MG) children’s author, Tyler Whitesides wrote a series called “Janitors”. The kids began, thirty minutes before scheduled signing to pile in with their parents, purchasing the second and recently released third book of the series. Their bright eyed, elated faces awaited the author eagerly in line to get their books signed. They were so cute! It made my little heart so excited about all these little ones here who like to…READ! I thought,  “Here are the future YA readers of South Florida” *single happy tear*

Book signing and meeting Tyler Whitesides

All in all, it was a great second week in the Bookstore for this Booknerd here! Apparently yesterday we received a shipment of books and in there, some YA titles I’m personally excited about, for example: Frozen by Melissa de la Cruz and Michael Johnston (co-authors and husband and wife…how cute!)

What is this Booknerd reading right now?

Glad you asked. Well, these days with training and working at the Bookstore, my reading had taken sadly, a backseat. Retail schedule is random so I’m adjusting to re-organizing my days. I finally finished Defiance by C.J. Redwine. I’m excited to get my hands on the 2nd book of the series, Deception.

Today I started a book series I’ve waited some time to delve into.

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Beautiful cover! All the books of the series, their covers are stunning. Great artwork. I read chapter one and already, I’m curious and hooked. I would check it out if you haven’t. Let me know your thoughts if you have or do.
